    The course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of different cultures, the role of cultural differences in everyday communication and in academic setting as well. It helps participants appreciate the issues, problems, and challenges inherent in cultural differences.

    Course Overview

    The course focuses on staff working in higher education (educators, trainers, administrative staff) and all those who wish to enhance their ability to effectively interact, work and develop meaningful relationships with colleagues, students and professionals from different cultures, that is essential in our globalized today world. The course will strengthen the essential intercultural skills, knowledge and competences required for people who is working with international students.

    Course Curriculum

    Day 1. Monday

  1. Welcome and introductions
  2. Individual expectations, setting objectives for the week
  3. Getting to know each other & ice-breakers
  4. Discussion about participants’ country, language, values, attitudes.
  5. What do you know about Cyprus?
  6. Day 2. Tuesday

  7. Culture and perception - beliefs, values, and attitudes
  8. Diverse cultural patterns - Hofstede’s cultural dimensions
  9. Practical experience and deeper understanding of the cultural dimensions
  10. Intercultural communication settings and education.
  11. Day 3. Wednesday

  12. Energizing exercises- Hall’s high and low-context languages
  13. Language and culture: importance and nature of language
  14. Language and meaning, language and co-cultures
  15. Nonverbal communication and culture
  16. Importance and functions of nonverbal communication (time, kinesics, proxemics)
  17. Case Studies
  18. Day 4. Thursday

  19. Intercultural Issues: Prejudice, Racism, and Discrimination
  20. Dealing with cultural differences in education
  21. Culture shock
  22. Understanding and support
  23. Improving intercultural communication and self-perception
  24. How can I implement what I have learnt in my professional and personal life

  29. Course Outcomes

    By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  30. Communicate and work with people from different cultural backgrounds at home or abroad
  31. Adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of communities
  32. Demonstrate intercultural values: tolerance, pluralism, accountability and openness to others
  33. Apply intercultural skills to create a personal development action plan
  34. Define the culture adaptation process and develop a strategy to foster effective interactions at work

    Certificate:

    Participants who attend at least 80% of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance either on Thursday or Friday.

    Schedule:

    Classes take place in the morning or afternoon at the providers' discretion. The schedule outlines may differ significantly depending on participants’ requests and on the trainer, who has discretion over any changes.

    Depending on the course, you may be required to bring your own laptop.
